Welcome to Look Closer.
This video is a real-time view of ice forming on top of a chilled horizontal window and viewed with a polarioid filter. Two freezing regimes shown: supper-cooled and continuous. The supercooled regime is shown first and takes place when every bit of ice is melted depriving the system of any seed crystal, the result is rapid freezing and a fibrous or stringy looking crystal structure. The continuous regime grows much more slowly and produces broader and more feather-like crystal domains.
